HISTORY OF THE GERMAN CLUB, EDENVALE
In 1952 the first German Round Table was held at the Edenvale Hotel. Beerfests and the founding of the German Club in Edenvale happened at the Town Hall in that year.
In 1957 a stand was purchased at 8 – 10 Plantation Road, Eastleigh for the price of £4,657, 19 shillings and 10 pence (approximately R9,300). On 5 October 1957 the first Beerfest was held at the new property and on 21 March 1958 the German Club Edenvale (Pty) Ltd was officially registered.
When the “Castle” was completed on 1 January 1959 a liquor licence was granted and at the end of March the small hall was completed. In August the first Manager was employed.
In early 1963 construction of the big hall started with the stage and the bottom part being completed in 1964. After 12 years of construction the Club House was completed as it stands today. In those days the Club had about 400 members who were actively involved in improving the Club.
Today, 58 years later, we can be proud that we have not lost our German tradition and culture.
